MONDAY MOTIVATION

Happy Memorial Day, everyone!

I'm having a quiet, yet busy weekend at home. Bob will be home on Friday and there's so much I need to get caught up on now that I can move freely again. The rib has mostly healed. I can tell when I've stressed the muscle. I've used the massager on my bed more in the past month than in the four years we've owned the bed.

With Bob due home, that means I really need to bust and get stuff done. I'm also getting back to writing in the evenings again as well as eyeing daytime sprints (though my word count isn't as high during the day). A friend of mine teaches nursing and will be out of school the end of this week. She has plans for several manuscripts and wants a sprinting buddy so I told her I'd be happy to help. Both of us might accomplish something. Like me, she prefers shorter sprints so I'm really looking forward to teaming up with her.

This week is all about blog posts as well as the creative projects I need to finish for youtube. I'm hoping to launch my authortube next week... with my first video discussing my Kanban board and goal setting for the end of the 3rd quarter on June 5. For now, I'll try to post something there on Saturdays. One day a week until I get something worth posting will be plenty.

So here's my week:

# Blog posts for the entire month of June. - I try to get these done ahead of time when I know Bob is going to be home because I don't do much of anything during those twenty-one days. Except for Monday Motivation, I am able to schedule the rest of the posts.

# Authortube video launch - Talking about the Kanban board and using my CEO Creativity Planner fro Alexis aka Miss Trenchcoat. I'll post one of her videos below as an introduction.

# Get my garden planner put together. I have everythign printed. Just need cut and assembled. My plants in the greenhouse are going crazy and I've not documented a single thing. Probably because instead of just ordering a planner, I ordered an undated one that I could just copy and use from year to year. That's always a time-consuming project but I can't afford $40 a year for a planner for the garden.

Here's a short video from Alexis with some great tips!

That's it for today! I hope you have a productive week.

All my best~

FRIDAY PHOTO - National Cellophane Tape Day

Good morning, friends!
Yesterday was National Cellophane Tape Day.
Okay, I'm going to admit to stretching the post topic a bit today so please bear with me.

While a lot of things are digital in today's office duties, we still use cellophane tape a lot - especially around the holidays and other occasions requiring us to attempt gift wrapping.

That said, whenever I hear the word 'cellophane' my brain instantly goes to the scene in the movie CHICAGO (that link will take you to the movie version)  But when I went looking for the previous link, I found the following one by Ben Vereen performed on The Muppets:

A SOLDIER'S HOMECOMING - Taking Chance

 Good morning, friends.

I'm taking a step away from the Korean War history to bring you a special Memorial Day Tribute.

One year ago today, the video below posted to YouTube. This Memorial Day Tribute is the true story of Pfc. Chance Russell Phelps

The story of Pfc. Phelps' return home is documented in the film, 'Taking Chance' staring Kevin Bacon. The emotional thread runs through the movie like a trip-wire. Strong, powerful, tugging at every conceivable emotion regarding the loss of life but more importantly the sacrifice our men and women are ready to make to insure our freedom.

You can rent or purchase a copy of the full movie HERE.

MONDAY MOTIVATION

Hi everyone! Welcome to the last few days of May. Wow this year is just zipping buy. As I head into the last month of Q2, I'm irritated that I was not more motivated to get things done. Of course, I did have one major bumb that through me for a loop ten days ago... but there were lots of opportunities prior to that in the quarter to accomplish. So let's see what I can accomplish towards finalizing Q2 items this week.

I did accomplish most of last week's goals. My editorial calendar is back in shape. This week I want to get back to the actual Daily planner as well as revamping my time-line for the launch of Book 2. That is so far off the mark... Ugh!

The rib and muscles are still healing. I'm more 'sore' than in pain and I'm hoping desk time will help keep that moving. Today I need to mow so the riding mower across our bumpy yard is probably NOT what my body wants but with more rain in the forecast for the rest of the week, the mowing needs done.

A friend of mine shared great news last night. We are going to begin teaming up in June to really push our writing career forward. I'm so happy to finally have someone with the same goals. We can keep each other motivated.

So my GOALS for this week:

* Begin process to get rights back to Somewhere Down the Line so I can release in print

* Revamp Book 2 plan for Launch

* Get ahead on June blog posts and projects before Bob comes home on the 4th.

* Be better about getting social media posts out

I am in a creative collab from May 27 - June 2  with Dearjuliejulie and CaraBrandonCreations, which will reguire a video every day.  You can see the digitals I'll be working with by clicking on their respective names. I take Day 1 from each lady and blend them into a project. Repeat with the remaining 7 days. I'm hoping to get those recorded today and tomorrow so they won't be last minute uploads.

That seven-day project as well as my own and writing should keep me busy.

Tomorrow, I'll be back to shine the spotlight on editor/ author Cheryl Wright. I've known Cheryl via the internet for almost fifteen years. I hope you'll come back and meet her.

All my best

THE WRITER'S NEST - Susan Eschbach

Note from Angela:

Over the next few months, not all Writer's Nest authors write romance. There may be a thread of romance in what they write - or not. However, they are great writers and should be showcased.

Let's meet Susan Eschbach

Good morning, everyone!

I want to introduce you to Susan Eschbach. I've known Susan for about ten years. She is a member of the Mid-South Writers of Cassville MO. They are an amazing critque group-very supportive of all writers and strong in their craft.

Thanks for joining me in the studio today, Susan.

Describe your writing nest.
I have two, one at my kitchen bar and one outdoors on my front porch. I prefer outdoors, where I seem to get three times as much work done, but it is temperature-dependent (70s to low 80s). This year I purchased a screened 6x6 foot cover to deal with the bugs, since the rest of my family doesn’t want the whole porch screened in (four of those being cats who believe they should have free reign of the area).

What is it about this space that inspires you?

The kitchen bar is the most comfortable spot for me indoors. I can’t concentrate when I’m secluded—I’ve always been that way. In college, I preferred to do my homework in the student commons rather than my room. Outdoors, I have nature around me, offering beautiful views whenever I look up from the screen, and the chitter of hummingbirds fighting over the feeder.

Has finding your space been an evolving journey? How so?
Yes. It has been only in the last three years or so that I discovered writing on the porch.

Anything you would change?
I’d eliminate most of the world’s bugs.

What advice would you give to someone looking to build their own nest?

Follow your own heart. Go where it works best for you personally.

Susan currently has two books out. Trial By Error and Man On the Fringe. I reviewed Trial By Error on Tuesday - in case you missed it, here is the link.

Today, we're showcasing:

BLURB:

OnThe Fringe, what you find nay not be what you seek.

Interstellar pilot Dahvin Tave leaves behind his routine life and true love, Tessiana d’Tieri, to return to The Fringe, the lawless region of space at the edge of the Milky Way. He has a new ship, a new crew, and a secret goal—to hunt down the aliens who enslaved him as a child and annihilate them.

There’s only one problem… he has to reach his destination first.

From the moment they begin their voyage, Dahvin and his shipmates deal with assassins, pirates, radiation storms, a crash landing, and a load of mysteriously exploding cargo.

But not all the dangers on The Fringe come from space. One of his crew has a secret that puts New Freedom squarely in the midst of a vicious planetary civil war. Worse yet, Tess’s ship has been ensnared as well and faces destruction in a space battle of epic proportions.

As Dahvin races across the cosmos in this hour of crisis, he’ll have to make a gut wrenching decision—save his ship and his crew, or rescue the love of his life from certain death.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT & REVIEW - A Trial By Error - Susan Eschbach

 Good morning, everyone!

We are super busy in the studio this week. On Friday, our Writer's Nest guest will be sci-fi author Susan Eschbach. She has two books out. I will feature her second book on Friday so I thought I'd take you inside A Trial By Error - Book one of The Fringe Cycle series

First, let's meet Susan Eschbach

BIO:
Susan Eschbach grew up in Kansas City. Her writing career began in elementary school when she had a 4-H club column in a Johnson County, Kansas, monthly newspaper. Her journalistic writing continued through high school and college and came in handy for several jobs. She embarked on her first novel in 2008 at the insistence of a close friend and members of the Mid -South Writers Group, convinced writing fiction would be easy because of her background in journalism. "Boy, was I ever wrong," she says. "It only took eight years to get it right."

Susan is married and the mother of two sons, one of whom is pursuing his own writing career. Their family is rounded out with a dog and four cats.

I'll save most of the info on Susan for Friday, but today I'm taking you inside her first book - A Trial By Error

BLURB:

On the fringe of known space, freedom is fleeting.

Dahvin Tave faces an uncertain future. Shot down by a team of Alliance Enforcers on the far fringe of the Milky Way and charged with the murder of the wealthiest, most influential man on planet Gehren, Dahvin is convinced he's been targeted as a scapegoat for a political assassination. He'd never been to Gehren and never met the man.

Aboard the ship transporting him to trial, Dahvin is befriended by Enforcer Tessianna d'Tieri, one of two officers who shot him. The pair develop a deep connection in spite of his distrust for authority and regulations against fraternizing with prisoners. He’s desperate to find a way to escape. She’s determined to save him.

Logs from his interstellar freighter and a visit to the murder scene dredge up terrifying suppressed memories and force him to face his involvement with the victim. Will the investigator in charge of the case prove his innocence, or cave to pressure from his superior to prove Dahvin is guilty?

One person holds the key.

While I'm not a big Sci-Fi reader,  I did enjoy this book.

Susan Eschbach's attention to building a believeable world and putting you there is beyond anything I've read. I've tried science fiction and with the exception of her writer's group mate, Linda Rose Sartin, I've never been able to follow a storyline with all the 'made up' stuff.

I read A Trial By Error over the course of two days and am looking forward to Book 2 as well as other books by Susan.

I'm giving A Trial By Error:

MONDAY MOTIVATION

Good morning, friends!

Can you tell Bob was home? LOL I managed to get some blog posts scheduled but since working wasn't in my perview, there weren't any goals to set. My motivation was to get out of bed every morning and spend as much time as possible with him before he went back to work.

This week, my main goal is to get my planners back in order. I've finished setting up the editorial calendar through June - which is the end of the second quarter. I've not worked in my planners since the middle of April. Between being gone the last week of that month then being home with Bob, planning just wasn't important. He's gone for the next eighteen days so I'm trying to get back on track and work ahead for when he does come home.

My other goal is to get back to writing. I've only written one night since my retreat back in April. While I won't make the deadline I'd hoped, I feel giving you a quality product is more important.  Since today is all about the computer work, I'm shelving the actual writing until tomorrow afternoon.

Last week I managed to pop a muscle under my right ribcage. I did that on Wednesday, you know, just in time for Bob to go back to work. I spent through Sautrday on round-the-clock pain meds and not much of anything else. I tried to be careful yesterday as I did some light housekeeping but by last night, the muscle knot had returned. Computer work and dishes will be the extent of my activities today.

Friday is Writer's Nest! We will have author Susan Eschbach with us. Tomorrow I'll shine the spotlight on her and review her first book - Trial By Error. Thursday, she hares a writing tip then takes us inside her writing nest on Friday.

If you like Sci Fi or Sci Fi Romance you won't want to miss those posts this week!

FRIDAY PHOTO - NATIONAL UNDERGROUND AMERICA DAY

Today is National Underground America Day!

Here's a brief explanation taken from the National Day Calendar website:

On March 14th, National Underground America Day recognizes the approximately 6,000 people who live in some form of underground architecture across North America. The observance also celebrates the lifestyle, architecture, and benefits of underground living.

Completely covered homes or earth-sheltered homes are covered on all sides with soil while earth-bermed homes leave one side exposed. Both allow for more stable temperatures within the home and less exposure to the elements.

However, there are also some disadvantages. If you like lots of light and throwing open the windows on a summer day, this type of house might not be for you.

Founded by Malcolm Wells in 1974, National Underground America Day recognizes that thousands of Americans dwell within the Earth, not just upon it. Wells (1926 – 2009) is considered “the father of modern earth-sheltered architecture.”

Wells was also a writer, illustrator, draftsman, lecturer, cartoonist, columnist, and solar consultant. He practiced what he preached by living in a modern earth-sheltered building of his own design, too.  He also took up the challenge of underground architecture as he believed the Earth’s surface was “made for living plants, not industrial plants.”

One of the activities suggested to celebrate National Underground Day is to tour an Earth Home. Here's a video for you.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT & REVIEW - Susan Hatler - Million Dollar Date

 Good morning, friends!

I have found a sweet read for today AND it's FREE on Kindle (as of this posting).

Let me introduce you to the author, Susan Hatler.

Here's a bit about Susan from her Author page:
SUSAN HATLER is a New York Times and USA TODAY Bestselling Author, who writes humorous and emotional contemporary romance and young adult novels. Many of Susan's books have been translated into German, Spanish, French, and Italian. A natural optimist, she believes life is amazing, people are fascinating, and imagination is endless. She loves spending time with her characters and hopes you do, too.

With Bob home, I've not had a lot time to read so when we got home from shopping last night I went to Amazon to see what was current that I could download and would be a fast read. I downloaded five free books and chose this one from Susan Hatler.

MILLION DOLLAR DATE is Book 1 in the Do-Over Date series.

Blurb:

Abigail Apple is running late to meet her blind date when she’s pulled over for speeding. Unfortunately, the follow-the-rules cop doesn’t care that she’s late, let alone that she’s heartbroken because her favorite dog rescue is in danger of being closed. Now she has to meet her date with mud drying on her heels, dog hair covering her dress, and the smell of a barn perfuming her hair. When she arrives, however, Abigail learns her handsome blind date is none other than the cop who pulled her over.

Abigail has no intention of staying until she learns Cooper Hill is heading a committee for the city that will award a six-figure donation to a charity of their choice. So, what’s a girl to do? Abigail decides a second date is the perfect way to convince Cooper to vote for the dog rescue. Soon, however, Abigail is less interested in Cooper’s vote than she is in his deep voice, kind heart, and tender touch.

Will this follow-the-rules cop and this follows-her-heart animal lover learn that despite poor first impressions, second chances can lead to love?

I found this book not only a quick read (they do list it as a Short Romance) but enjoyable. The story line is light, humorous and not overdone. Some authors try to pack too much into a short romance. Susan Hatler knew what she wanted to accomplish. She gave us a great opening, bringing the hero and heroine together instantly as well as a good picture of who our heroine, Abigail Apple, is. We got a bit more infor on the hero, Cooper Hill, in subsequent chapters, as was needed. This was definitely a heroine driven story. From the great opening, Susan takes us through the core of the plot, saving the dog rescue.

There are nine books total in this series. We are introduced to the heroine for Book 2 in this story.

I'm giving Million Dollar Date:

Remember, Million Dollar Date is FREE on Kindle as of this posting!

FRIDAY PHOTO - National Military Spouse Day

 Good morning, everyone!

I thought I would make use of the National Days Calendar for our Friday Photo. Use them as prompts or inspiration.

Today is National Military Spouse Day.

Since one of the main secondary characters in An Ozarks Soldier's Homecoming is Miss Edna May Sterling, I thought this was the perfect post for today.

In the story, Miss Edna has never wanted to accept the fact that her husband was gone. Even with a declaration of death, she never gives up hope that someday her Daniel will come home.  Sadly, a lot of spouses are left with nothing but a flag to hold when times are tough or the nights get cold.

From the National Day Calendar website:

Next time you see a veteran, remember to thank their spouse for service to our country, as well.

THE KOREAN WAR - How Did the Conflict Begin?

Beginning today, I will be sharing things about my current work in progress (WIP)

The inspiration for An Ozarks Soldier's Homecoming began when I stook along side the road and watched the procession bringing CPL Donald Eugene Matney home to Seymour MO. I'd never seen support such as CPL Matney received on his journey. Even his Uncle commented in a presentation he gave at the Broomfield Veterans Museum in April of 2017 how the state of Missouri did his nephew (his wife's nephew) proud.

From what I understand, nearly every overpass from St. Louis to Seymour had people lined up with flags and saluting as he passed below. I didn't realize at the time the importance of that motorcade, only that a serviceman was coming home. Here's a news clip from one of our local new stations KY3 (Springfield MO)

You only need to see the first 6 minutes or so.

By the time I'd driven the ninety minutes back home (I was on my way home from Springfield) I had a story idea in my head. My brain always goes to the 'What If... " when something catches my attention.

So, how did the Korean War begin?
Here's what I found from (historycrunch.com *) websight as well as (Wikipedia **)

The main reason the United States got involved in Korea was the purpose of doing everything possible to keep communism from spreading around world. *

United Nations Security Council Resolution 82 was a measure adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on June 25, 1950. The resolution demanded North Korea immediately end its invasion of South Korea **

The resolution called on the North to immediately halt its invasion and to move its troops back to the 38th parallel. Seen as a diplomatic victory for the United States, the resolution was completely ignored by North Korea. This brought the UN and the US to take further action, setting the state for massive international involvement and the expansion of the Korean War.

The Korean Conflict was not suppose to be an all-out war. We were to be a police action... at least that's what the government told our boys.

As I researched for An Ozarks Soldier's Homecoming, I learned so much about the Korean War and how our boys coming home failed to receive the welcome they should have. Very little is said about WW1. We hear about the economy boosts after WWII and what a political fiasco the Vietnam War was - the deplorable conditions for our soldiers, yet the Korean War truly has become 'the forgotten war'. After doing my research, I won't ever forget what our boys went through only to be treated as if their sacrifice didn't matter.

The following video is actually in regards to a WWII veteran but I wanted to share - This Old Army Hat by Bill Anderson.

We'll continue this next Wednesday...

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT - Gae- Lynn Woods

Okay, so I hit a roadblock yesterday. The book I've been reading on my kindle has disappeared from amazon. I haven't had the book that long! LOL who knows.

So as I scrolled through really early posts on this blog I found one I thought might be appropriate.

The final day to file taxes is May 17, 2021. So if you've been dragging your feet you might find this post helpful.

If you've filed your taxes already, or haven't had to file as a business before, then Gae-Lynn's visit (from 3/5/2013) should be helpful.

We see a lot of tasks as 'dreaded'. Taxes definitely fall into the category of forewarned is forearmed. Plan now and you won't be dreading this task next year.

Gae-Lynn Woods

I don't know a single person who enjoys Tax time. I would rather write a synopsis than think about taxes as a self-employed filer. Okay, so that's not the best example since I don't mind writing the synopsis, but you get my drift. Last year I came across a blog by someone 'in the know' when it comes to taxes. Gae-Lynn Woods is a talented author and a CPA so she understands how this all works from both points of view. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comment section. Also, feel free to share a link to this and any of my posts.

Thanks so much to Angela for letting me stop by The Writers Studio to chat! Getting ready for tax season is a chore most of us dread. But as an author, you’re running a small business with all the privileges and responsibilities thereof. I know, I know! You’re an artist, not a grubby businessperson. But once you put your work out into the world for sale, you need to know how much income (or loss) you’re generating. It’s not as hard as it sounds. Really. All you need is a little discipline. And anyone who can produce a book can master the fine art of tracking income and expenses.
The tips I’m sharing apply to all sorts of businesses. We run four: my husband is a musician; we raise beef cattle; and I have an accounting business and a writing business. Regardless of your professional focus, there are two important reasons to track income and expenses during the year: the first is to provide you with a means to monitor your business performance. The second and most practical is to make tax time easier. If you’ve ever shoved your paperwork into a drawer only to cry when you dig it out during tax season, you’ll dance with glee when you pull your organized paperwork out!

There are oodles of ways to achieve these goals – this is my process, but use that creative brain of yours to massage it into something that works for you. Because we run four businesses, I try to update our records at least twice each month to keep the paperwork from getting out of control. You may find that monthly or even quarterly updates are frequent enough for you.
Confession time: this isn’t the most enjoyable part of my life. In fact, I whine a bit before getting started. But once I’m into the process – well, once I’m done – I feel great. I hope you will, too. So, grab a coffee (or something stronger), let loose with a few groans, and let’s get started!

Tools
I use a few simple tools to track our expenses:
1) We keep a small notebook in each vehicle. If we’re driving somewhere for business purposes, we note the date, purpose of the trip, and starting and ending mileage.
2) I transfer the details from each of our business related trips to a desk calendar and follow the same form in the notebooks: trip purpose, starting and ending miles, and total miles travelled during that trip. I also note any important work related events in our calendar (cow sales or purchases, hay cutting, gig income, etc.).

3) On each work related receipt, we note which business it’s for and then toss the receipt in a basket on my desk. When it’s time to update our records, I dump the basket and start sorting.

4) I enter all information into a spreadsheet to capture expenses by category. Each business has its own spreadsheet, but they all follow the same general format, explained below. This is the place where we keep an eye on how each business is doing, and come tax time, it’s a matter of ensuring each column adds correctly and then clicking the print button. Yes, it really is that easy!

5) I separate the receipts by business, clip one month’s worth of receipts together, and stick them in a legal sized envelope. This clears my desk and helps me keep track of what I’ve completed. It also keeps the receipts in the same order that I’ve used to enter them onto the spreadsheet, in case I have questions later.

The Spreadsheet
One of the most challenging aspects of filling in tax forms is figuring out which number goes where. To ease the process, I follow the categories the IRS has set out on Schedule C, the form you’ll file at tax time (see it here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sc.pdf). I only include the categories I use, and each has its own column. Each row represents a separate transaction (income, expense, and / or mileage with no related expense).

Some of your receipts won’t fit into the existing Schedule C categories. For example, if you subscribe to a writing magazine, you might need another column called “Publications”. Add it to your spreadsheet include these items on page two of your Schedule C.

I hope this has been helpful, and that the paperwork aspect of your writing business feels a little less daunting. Questions are certainly welcome!

Avengers of Blood (A Cass Elliot Crime Novel) – Blurb

A deadly game of cat and mouse is playing out in Forney County…

Detective Cass Elliot is still on suspension after killing a fellow officer and Sheriff Hoffner refuses to sign her release papers. But when four people are murdered in one night, one with the exceptional brutality of a lynching, the Medical Examiner side-steps Hoffner to hire Cass and loan her to Forney County’s overstretched police department.

As Cass and her partner investigate, they realize that three of the murders were committed by the same person but find no connection between the victims. Their frustration intensifies when another victim survives and disappears instead of coming to the police.

Sheriff Hoffner is frantic about anonymous letters claiming one of his star officers is dirty, and Cass suspects a link to the current crimes. The pieces fall together when she uncovers the true identity of the man who was lynched, revealing connections between the victims, the killer, and an unpunished crime committed nearly fifty years ago.

Author Bio:

Gae-Lynn Woods is a Texan who has traveled the world, lived overseas, and come back home. She and her husband, British jazz guitarist Martyn Popey, share a ranch in East Texas with a herd of Black Angus cattle and one very cranky donkey.

THE DEVILOF LIGHT and AVENGERS OF BLOOD are the first two books in the Cass Elliot crime series. When she's not playing the roadie, tending to cows, fixing fence, or digging post holes, Gae-Lynn is working on the third Cass Elliot novel.

MONDAY MOTIVATION

Good afternoon, everyone!

I got home last night around 8 p.m. and I was exhausted. Why is it the drive home always seems longer than the drive to the destination?

I visited with Kassie and the grandbabies Tuesday night and Wednesday morning before heading back to Muscatine IA as my stopping point for a couple of days to write. A couple turned into four! I just knew I needed the time and as Bob said, I was already there and set up so I just ran with it.

I'm a mixture of planner/ pantster/ quilter. From a planner perspective I know what needs to happen and a geneeral idea of where in the story. For the actual writing process I pretty much fly by the seat of my pants writing out things that come to my brain. I may write on one scene til I hit a block, close it out then jump to another. When all is said and done, I figure out how all the pieces need to fit together, then start the quilting process of putting things in order, filling in the bridges between scenes as I go.

I didn't accomplish much Wednesday night except to finish a book I had started the night before - review coming tomorrow. Thursday after I breakfast I jumped right in putting a filing system in place on the computer to fit all the pieces in to then started writing. I did a lot of 20 minute sprints. Some were really productive. By Saturday night I'd written over 4,000 words on this story in three days.

I'm home now and focusing on the blog posts as well as spending time with Bob. He leaves out on the 11th. I'm taking tonight off to just chill with him but starting tomorrow night I want to spend a couple hours every night working on the story. I don't want to lose momentum.

Goals for this week:

1 - 2000 words. More would be great

2 - get a couple things done in the office I need his help with while he's home

3 - blog posts for this week and part of next. I'll worry about catching up the rest of the month next Tuesday after he leaves.

Remember, beginning this week I'll be combining Author Spotlight and Review on Tuesdays. Wednesdays will be posts that correlate to the book I am writng.

All my best
